Nel Frattempo in America: la band Tennis System e il loro nuovo album Technicolour Blind – Intervista

di Giulia Tempesta - Oggi vorrei presentarvi una band americana che sta lottando tra i grandi gruppi degli U.S. per emergere: i Tennis System. Band nata nel 2009 con alle spalle il freddo background di Washington, si ripresenta nel 2014 ai propri fan, dopo il trasferimento nell'assolata California, con il nuovo album intitolato Technicolour Blind.

Vi presento qui un'intervista con il cantante della band Matty Taylor, sia in italiano che nella versione originale, che ci presenta il suo gruppo.
A mio parere un gruppo che meriterebbe di essere ascoltato anche da questo lato dell'oceano!

-Da dove prendete ispirazione per le vostre canzoni? Quali sono i gruppi che vi sono d’ispirazione? 

"Prendo ispirazione da tutto, l’arte, la musica, la vita di tutti i giorni… Più precisamente molta della mia ispirazione viene dall’hip hop. Gruppi che mi ispirano sono The Ropers, Drake, Eric’s trip, Kanye West, Jay-z, Rare Essence, Souls of Mischief, The Cure…"

- Come è cambiato il vostro stile nel nuovo album? Alcuni descrivono il vostro genere come “dream pop”, pensate che questa etichetta descriva bene voi e il vostro stile?

"Non ho cambiato il mio stile sto solo crescendo come musicista. Mi sto concentrando su come migliorare nel mio campo.

Non so se direi che lo descriva. Forse se volessi classificare questo disco, si certo, ma nel complesso? Nah. Penso che il problema di questa generazione sia questo (il dover classificare), questo è ciò di cui parlo nel nostro disco. Le persone devono vedere i nostri live per capire chi siamo. Il nostro live è crudo di brutto!"

- Il vostro nuovo album sembra abbracciare molte sfumature diverse, molti temi potenti. Perché avete optato per questo titolo? Perché “Technicolour Blind”?

"In realtà ho avuto molte difficoltà con il titolo del disco. Ho scelto “Technicolour Blind” perché quando le persone pensano a Los Angeles, sono accecate da questa immagine di perfezione e bellezza. Ti viene mostrato Hollywood, le spiagge, il bel tempo, le persone affascinanti, e tu sei accecato da tutto questo,. Quando, in realtà, è molto dura qui"

-Com’è cambiata la vostra musica e la vostra vita personale dopo il trasferimento da Washington a Los Angeles? Rimpiangete di averlo fatto a volte?

"È stato davvero uno schiaffo in faccia. Sono sempre stato attaccato alla mia casa ed ho sempre avuto la mia famiglia a guardarmi le spalle quando ne avevo bisogno. Da quando sono qui, sono solo. Ho dovuto imparare ad essere più in armonia con me stesso. Sono cresciuto e ho imparato molto sullo stare soli. Per quanto riguarda i cambiamenti nella musica, ho avuto molto tempo libero qui. Ho potuto concentrmi maggiormente sulla mia musica e meno sul lavoro. Se lo rimpiango? Non ho tempo per guardarmi indietro."

-In Technicolour Blind molti testi sembrano riferirsi ad esperienze personali. Quale diresti che possa incarnare l’argomento principale nel nuovo album?

"Penso sia abbastanza chiaro qual è il soggetto principale. Bisogna solo ascoltarlo e ognuno deve trarne le proprie interpretazioni."

-State pianificando un tour fuori dagli Stati Uniti?

"Cavolo. Il piano rimane quello. Ma non abbiamo molti contatti al di fuori degli U.S. Il che lo rende piuttosto impossibile."

- Qual è il vostro consiglio alle band emergenti come la vostra?

"Mostra semplicemente te stesso. Sii te stesso e concentrati sul quello che ami."

   

Meanwhile in America: Tennis System and their new album Technicolour Blind - Interview

Today, i want to introduce an american band making room between famous band of the US, to emerge: Tennis System. Band formed in 2009 with behind the cold background of Washington, returns in 2014 to their fans, after the transfer in sunny California, with the new album titled Technicolour Blind.

I present here an interview with the singer of the band Matty Taylor, which presents his group and its sounds. 

In my opinion, a band that deserves to be heard even on this side of the ocean!

-Where do you take inspiration for your songs? Are there any bands you take inspiration from? 

"I pull inspiration from everywhere, art, music, every day life…More specifically, a lot of my inspiration comes from hip-hop. Bands that inspire me are The Ropers, Drake, Eric’s Trip, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Rare Essence, Souls of Mischief, The Cure… "

-How did your style change in the new album? Some people describe your genre as “dream pop”, do you feel like this label describes you and your style well? 

"I didn’t change my style, I’m just growing, as a musician. I’m focusing on how to get better at my craft. I don’t know if I’d say it does. Maybe if you wanted to classify this record, sure, but as a whole? Nah. I think the biggest problem with this generalization is that that is what you hear on our record. People need to attend our live show to see who we are. Our live show is raw as shit."

-Your new album seems to embrace a lot of different shades, a lot of powerful themes. Why did you decide for this title? Why “Technicolour blind”? 

"I actually fumbled a lot with the title of the record. I went with ‘Technicolour Blind’ because, when people think of Los Angeles, they’re blinded by this image that it’s so beautiful and perfect here. You’re shown Hollywood, the beaches, the nice weather, the beautiful people and you’re blinded by that. When, in reality, it’s hard as shit here."

-How did the move from DC to LA change your music and your personal lives? Do you ever regret it? 

"It was a slap in the fucking face. I’ve always been close to home and able to always have my family to get my back when I needed them. When I was here, it was just me. I had to learn to become more in-tune with myself. I did a lot of growing and learned more about being alone. As far as changing my music goes. I had a lot of down time here. I was able to focus more on my music and less on work. Do I regret it? I don’t have time to look backwards. "

-In “Technicolour blind” a lot of the lyrics seem to refer to personal experiences. What would you say is the main subject in your new album? 

"I think it’s pretty clear what the main subject is. Listen to it and make your own interpretation."

-Are you planning on touring outside of the US sometime soon? 

"Shit. That’s always the “plan.” We don’t really have any contacts across the pond, which makes it pretty impossible."

-What is your advice to emerging bands like yours? 

"Just do you. Be yourself and focus on what you love."
