Yuko: Kristof Deneijs racconta il loro nuovo album Long Sleeves CauseAccidents - Intervista

di Sisco Montalto - Long Sleeves Cause Accidents è il terzo album in studio della band belga. Arriva tre anni dopo il precedente As If We Were Dancing, ed è il risultato, a detta loro, del duro lavoro svolto nel nuovissimo studio della band.


Long Sleeves Cause Accidents, è probabilmente il classico disco della maturazione, nel quale gli Yuko hanno fatto confluire tutta la loro esperienza, creando un disco dalla forte personalità.

Kristof Deneijs, leader e voce degli Yuko, mi ha raccontato la nascita del nuovo disco, le influenze che ci sono dietro e l`idea di realizzare in futuro un progetto particolare..

- Nella presentazione dell’album dite di aver trovato il sound ideale. E’ il sound perfetto, quello che avevate in mente o semplicemente è venuto fuori negli anni?

"Io spero che questo sia il sound definitivo degli Yuko. Sento che ci siamo ritagliati il nostro spazio con questo suono ma non si puo’ mai sapere in anticipo. Forse quando registreremo il nuovo album ci sarà un`altra evoluzione. Sebbene sia un suono molto personale, è venuto fuori spontaneamente."

- Mi raccontate la genesi di Long Sleeves Causes Accidents? Sembra esserci molto lavoro dietro..

"E’ iniziato tutto da me, ascoltando molta musica classica, perché non mi piace la musica rock-pop che si sente in radio sempre più spesso. Così ho cercato di fare nuove canzoni guidato da questa ispirazione. Il passo successivo è stato quello di trovare i musicisti giusti che potevano far confluire questo mio sentimento e farlo diventare qualcosa di concreto. Da quel momento in poi la musica si è sviluppata organicamente."

- Molta gente definisce la vostra musica post-rock. Voi che definizione date al vostro stile e alla vostra musica?

"Non abbiamo mai cercato di definire il genere degli Yuko. Sì, si puo’ chiamare post-rock, ma credo che  le voci e i diversi cambiamenti di umore in realtà non appartengano tanto al post-rock."

- Nella vostra musica c’è un richiamo alla musica barocca, un suono ricco con influenze classiche. Perché combinare questi stili apparentemente molto diversi fra loro?

"Immagino che l’emozione sia la chiave. Invece di combinare stili diversi di proposito abbiamo cercato di raggiungere il nostro stile facendoci trascinare dai sentimenti. D’altra parte combinare stile diversi è un ottimo modo per essere creativi. Abbiamo cercato di aggiungere qualcosa di nuovo senza ripetere semplicemente quello che gli altri gruppi hanno già fatto. Penso che questo sia l’unico modo di emergere come artista e guadagnare il diritto di esistere."

- In Long Sleeves Cause Accidents c’è una forte influenza dei Radiohead. Quanto la band inglese ha influenzato e influenza il vostro sound?

"Per la mia generazione i Radiohead sono stati il primo gruppo veramente sperimentale e allo stesso tempo molto popolare in radio. Hanno pubblicato singoli che duravano 4-5 minuti, avevano un suono strano e avevano diverse sfaccettature anche nella stessa canzone. In questo senso sono stati un grande modello e ci hanno influenzato molto."

- L’idea di registrare un album di cover di classici religiosi era uno scherzo o eri/eravate seri riguardo questo progetto?

"Sì, ero davvero serio riguardo a questa possibilità, ma purtroppo gli altri membri della band non condividevano questa mia idea e così è stata congelata per il momento."

- In the presentation of new album, you say you've found the final sound. Is this the perfect sound you had in mind or did it "simply" came out from attempts over the years?

"Well, I hope this will be the definitive sound of Yuko. I feel like we’ve claimed our own place with this sound. But you can never tell in advance, maybe it will further evolve when we record a new album. Even though we’re very specific about this sound, it grew spontaneously."

-Tell me about the genesis of Long Sleeves Causes Accidents...It seems like there’s a lot of work behind .. 
"It started by me listening to a lot of classical music because I didn’t like the pop-rock music that was playing on the radio anymore. Soon I was trying to make new songs driven by this inspiration. The next step was to find the right musicians who could intensify this feeling and really make it their own. From that point on, the music developed organically."

 -Many people define your style post-rock: would you lay down a definition of your style and music?
"We've never tried to define the specific genre in wich Yuko would fit. Yes, you can call it post-rock. But I guess the vocals and different mood changes don’t really belong in post rock."

-In your music there's a recall to a baroque sound, very rich. I also read of classical influences. Why did you choose to combine so much (apparently)different styles? 
"Emotion is the key I guess. Rather than combining different styles on purpose, we reached for deep feelings. On the other hand, combining different styles is a great way to be creative. We tried to add something new. Don’t just repeat what other bands did. I think that’s the only way to truly stand out as an artist and earn your right to exist."

-In Long Sleeves Cause Accidents there's a strong influence of Radiohead's music. How much does the British band influence your sound?

"In my generation, Radiohead was the first band to be really experimental and widely popular on the radio at the same time. They released singles that were longer than 4-5 minutes, had a weird sound and had very diverse emotions in the same song. They are a huge influence and role model to us in that way."

-The idea to record an album of classical religious cover was a joke or were/are you serious about this project ?
"Yes, I am very serious about that. But unfortunately the other band members do not share my enthusiasm. So the idea is stored in the fridge for now."
